Maine Retired Skippers Race

  • Maine Maritime Acadamy (map)

The Maine Retired Skippers Race has run continuously since 1952. Originally a match race between two retired professional skippers, the race has evolved into a “pursuit race”. The racecourse is a twelve-mile triangle, which begins at the entrance to Castine harbor.

Since its inception, the purpose of this race has been to allow retired skippers, aged 65 or older, to show their boat handling skills at the helm of sailing vessels designed primarily for cruising. Fifteen trophies are awarded (sorry, you can’t take them home), and the winners are recorded in the Race History. While race boats are not expressly excluded, each vessel is expected to contain full cruising amenities for a boat its size.
