Maine Rocks Race

2008 was the first year for this short-handed race over 113 miles along the Midcoast of Maine. It has become an annual RYC-sponsored tradition. The PHRF-rated event is opened to boats crewed by one or two people. Membership in RYC is not required. The race offers those that participate the experience of sharpening short handed offshore sailing skills and refining systems and procedures for shorthanded passage making.

Offshore is in quotes because we want to open this event to one designs of virtually all sizes. Our goal is to have as many classes as possible represented (min 3 boats in a class) from 420s through J/105s – and everything in between.  All races will be held under the appropriate class rules, no handicaps.  Courses will likely be windward-leeward with offset marks, possibly with leeward gates and separate start and finish lines.

MS Harborfest Regatta

The MS Regatta is at the heart of MS Harborfest Weekend.  Now in its 36th year, the MS Regatta is the longest running and largest charitable sailing event in Northern New England and on the GMORA Circuit.

Pre-race festivities:  Friday, Aug, 18th:  Skippers meeting at 6pm, followed by the MS Benefit Auction featuring over 300 items, food and drinks.  Skippers can earn additional auction passes by fundraising for crew and guests.  Auction tickets can be purchased at the door.

Amazing Racing Experience:  Saturday, August 19th events start with the first gun at 12:30pm with the MS Regatta's expert race committee overseeing three courses of varying lengths through Portland Harbor to Clapboard Island.  We have racing, cruising, one-design and classic divisions.  Class sizes are kept small and well separated to reduce stress on our novice skippers and crews as well.

Post Race Celebration:  At the conclusion of the race, join all skippers and crew at the Post Race Party!  Enjoy a hearty feast donated by local businesses, including Longhorn Steak House, Cozy Harbor lobsters, and Shipyard Brewing beverages.  Awards will be presented, including the highly coveted Greenhorn Award for Best Rookie boat and the Team Spirit Award, which receives a five pound whoopee pie.  Additional tickets can be earned through fundraising or can be purchased 2 weeks prior to the event.

Making a Difference:  The MS Harborfest Regatta is the largest regatta in Casco Bay and on the GMORA circuit.  There are a lot of points at stake for those competing for the Dirigo Bowl.  But more importantly, the event raises thousands of dollars which help fund local services for over 3,000 Mainers affected by MS so they can live their best possible life, and fund research initiatives to STOP MS, RESTORE what it has taken, and END MS forever.

The MS Harborfest Regatta is a highly anticipated tradition spanning 36 years.  Come this year to experience a Great Maine Sailing Adventure, knowing that you are making a difference for someone right here in Maine.

Monhegan Regatta

Experience what real open ocean racing is all about.  This longer-distance, overnight race puts the focus on endurance, navigating and strategy, as well as boat speed.  Multiple class breakdowns and varying length races for both fully crewed and shorthanded sailors make up the Monhegan event.

The race coupled with a terrific pre-race party makes this event extra-special.  This year we intend to finish the races at Portland Head Light so racers can avoid the oft-times frustrating situation of racing back into Casco Bay in light air against the tides.

Moorings are available for boats attending this event.  Just drop us an email letting us know your needs.  And radio our Waterfront on Channel 68 when you arrive, and they will direct you to an appropriate mooring.

Accept the challenge:  Come to the Monhegan!

43rd Annual BHYC Regatta

  • Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

2017 marks the 43rd annual running of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta.  The regatta is a premier event on the Gulf of Maine Ocean Racing Association (GMORA) circuit.  The regatta hosts many different classes of competition, from PHRF racing and cruising classes to one-design classes including Boothbay Harbor One-Designs, J80's, J24's, and J22's.

The BHYC Regatta attracts between 30 and 60 boats from all over Maine to race two full days in and around Boothbay Harbor.  There are classes of competition for everyone, including the hard-core racer and the cruisers who want to compete in their first race.  One-design class racing is fun, and often takes place in the inner bay with close competition and racing quarters.

This year's competition will feature new racing formats, with a mix of Windward-Leeward and "Round the Islands" racing in Boothbay.  Coastal islands such as Squirrel, Southport and Damariscove, will act as picturesque backdrops and interesting geographical obstacles.  Cruising classes sail one long race each day winding themselves through the many islands and guts along the Gulf of Maine.

Keep an eye on www.bhyc.net and BHYC's Facebook page for upcoming information on a completely new social schedule featuring unique new opportunities for fun.

Junior Program Foundation Cup

The BHYC Junior Program Foundation Regatta is a one day, GMORA-scored, PHRF event to provide the opportunity for competitors to enjoy a day of racing in the Boothbay Region while helping to encourage young people to join our wonderful sport. The BHYC Junior Program Foundation provides scholarships and other funding to support the Junior Sailing Program at BHYC, as well as the Boothbay Region High School Sailing Team. High school sailors from up and down the peninsula and neighboring islands sail weekdays, practicing skills, and compete weekends with other high school sailing teams from around the state of Maine. The BHYC Junior Program helps hundreds of children learn to sail each summer in its 10 week program.

Owners are requested to take onboard at least one youth (age 13+) from the BHYC Junior Program or the Boothbay Region High School Sailing Team; such person shall NOT be counted toward crew number or weight restrictions. This is a wonderful way to introduce our young sailors to keelboat racing and a great way for you to get someone with some local knowledge on board! Funds raised by this event will go to the BHYC Junior Program Foundation to benefit youth sailing. The BHYC Jr. Program Foundation is a 501c(3) corporation and all donations are tax deductible.

Round Southport Race

This fun race between BHYC sailors and the Southport Yacht Club was resurrected in 2011 when the original trophy, a black garbage pail, was located.

The Southport Yacht Club and Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club are proud to present the annual ‘Round Southport Race. This race returned in 2011 with a new format recapturing the essence of the original race that was held from 1968 to 1982. While we can no longer race through the Townsend Gut, this race does go around most of the island.

The ‘Round Southport race is a fun race for boats of all sizes, often drawing 20 or more boats. Past participants have ranged from a Herreshoff 12½ (Doughdish) and Club 420 to a Morris M52.

The race is a 9.55nm Pursuit Race; there is a cruising class and a racing class. In addition to the individual boats competing, the top three finishing boats from BHYC and SYC will determine the club that wins the coveted Trash Can Trophy. Will BHYC hold onto the coveted trash can in 2017?

This race will count as a GMORA Race Day and will be scored for the Boothbay Region and towards overall trophies. This is a fun and challenging race for sailors of all ages.
